A resident of Ethel and native of Galvez, she died at 7:49 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at Ochsner Health Center in Baton Rouge. She was 86. She was an exquisite cook. Her pecan pies, roast and holiday turkey were among family favorites. She loved to entertain, and always welcomed everyone to her table. She graced the cosmetic counter of D.H. Holmes as an Estee Lauder consultant, and owned the Bathroom House Showroom in Baton Rouge. Visiting at Ascension Funeral Home, 426 W. New River St., Gonzales, Saturday, Aug. 13, from noon until the service at 2 p.m., conducted by Pastor Reggie Wilcutt. Burial following in Hope Haven Garden of Memory. She leaves behind five sons, Bruce Broussard Jr., Thad Chaney, Dave Chaney, Rhett Chaney and C.C. Chaney; two stepsons, David Dixon and Keith Dixon; a stepdaughter, Susan Dixon Shields; and sister, Dorothy Gay Evans. She had a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, daughters-in-law and son-in-law. Hazel loved them all and amazingly remembered each one's name and birth date. Special thanks to her devoted caregiver, Mrs. Ann Mathes. Hazel called Mrs. Ann her "Guardian Angel." She was preceded in death by her parents, Merritt Evans Sr. and Zilda Batts Evans; two sisters, Theo Evans Aydell and Goldie Evans Molina; four brothers, Van Evans Sr., Abner Evans, John W. Evans and Merritt "M.P." Evans Jr. Pallbearers will be Thad Chaney, Dave Chaney, Rhett Chaney, Brian Breaux, Michael Shields, David Dixon, and Keith Dixon. Honorary pallbearers are Bruce Broussard Jr., Nathaniel Broussard, Jordan Breaux and Jonathan Breaux. Hazel loved her plants, her fish, her birds, her faithful Yorkshire terrier, Beauregard, her family, and most of all her children. Even though hard circumstances prevented a close relationship with some of them, the physical distance never dampened the fierce love she felt for each one. "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." 1 Corinthians 13:13. Hazel Evans Brewer loved and was loved by many.
